anterior cruciate ligament
- The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a band of fibrous tissue that provides support to the knee joint by connecting bones or cartilages. It is one of the four important ligaments of the knee. The anterior cruciate ligament can be injured by tearing. Its fibres can be torn, or a tear can develop where the ligament attaches to the femur, which is the thighbone, or to the tibia, which is the lower leg bone.
congenital dislocation of the hip
bone grafts
hip pinning
- Hip pinning is a procedure used to repair a hip fracture, or broken hip. Pinning means that one or more special metal pins are inserted into a bone or bones. Many people with hip fractures need to have this procedure. Often, it enables the hip to begin functioning and the person to move around earlier than if the bone had to heal on its own. Also, it can help reduce complications.
bunion repair
- Bunion surgery is a surgical procedure performed on the great toe joint. The purpose is to correct a deformity of the great toe or to remove a painful bump, called a bunion, at its base.
hip joint replacement
- Hip joint replacement is a surgical procedure to replace the hip joint. The new joint is artificial, and has two parts. The first part is the hip's socket, called the acetabulum. This is a cup-shaped bone in the pelvis. The second part is the "ball" or head of the femur, also called the thighbone.
joint aspiration
- Synovial fluid is a liquid found in small amounts within the joints. This liquid is produced by the membrane lining the capsule of a joint, known as the synovial membrane. During a joint aspiration, the synovial fluid is drawn out using a needle, and looked at under a microscope.
joint x-ray
- A joint x-ray is a radiographic image of a place where bones in the body connect. Examples include the knee, elbow and ankle. X-rays consist of electromagnetic waves of energy. They penetrate the body to varying extents depending on the density of the structures being viewed. The result is back and white images of interior portions of the body.
knee arthroscopy
meniscus tear
- The meniscus is cartilage inside the knee joint. Tearing can occur on either side, the medial (inside) or lateral (outside). Meniscus is the name for either of two pieces of tough cartilage inside the knee joint. They are shaped like half moons and are sometimes called semilunar cartilage. One is on the medial side and one is on the lateral side. They act as cushions between the femur, or the thigh bone, and the tibia, which is the major bone of the lower leg, to which they are connected.
physiotherapy
- Physiotherapy is a group of services provided by a health care professional. It helps preserve, develop, and restore physical function. It can help restore physical health that has been lost to injury, disease, or other causes. The goals are to relieve pain and promote fitness and health.
regional anesthesia
posterior cruciate ligament injury
- This type of injury results from the tearing of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in its fibres or at its attachment to the femur or tibia.
rotator cuff repair
- The rotator cuff is made of four muscles in the shoulder and upper arm. The muscles are attached to bones by tough cords called tendons. These muscles help the shoulder joint to function. They also provide stability to the shoulder joint. A rotator cuff repair is a surgical procedure to fix a tear in a rotator cuff. The tear is usually located in the tendon, but sometimes it also involves one of the muscles.
runner's knee
radial head fracture
- This condition involves a fracture of the radius bone, one of the 2 forearm bones, at the elbow.
scoliosis
slipped capital femoral epiphysis
spinal anesthesia
spinal cord abscess
- A spinal cord abscess is a walled off area of infection within the spinal cord.
spinal fusion
- Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure that involves the joining, or fusion, of two or more vertebrae, the bones that make up the spine. The purpose is to correct abnormal movement between vertebrae to prevent potential damage to the spinal cord.
spondylolisthesis
- Spondylolisthesis means the slipping of one vertebra over the top of the one below it. The vertebrae are the box-shaped bones that make up the spine.
tissue donation
Total knee replacement
- Knee joint replacement is surgery to replace a damaged or diseased knee joint with an artificial joint, or prosthesis. The goal is to improve the mobility and function of the knee joint and reduce pain.
