Alternative Names winter itch, cold weather itch, asteatosis
Definition Dry skin is sometimes worsened by the dry winter air and air conditioning. Skin can become itchy and uncomfortable during the winter season.
What is going on in the body? The surface of the skin holds a certain amount of water. When environmental conditions cause the skin to dry out, it can become dry, itchy and uncomfortable.
What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? Symptoms of winter dry skin include:
dryness and scaling
redness and chapping
cracks and fissures
itching
tenderness
What are the causes and risks of the condition? People who have had eczema(chronic inflammation of the skin that can cause red, oozing crusts)in the past are prone to this condition. Dry air, because of low winter humidity and indoor heat, can cause skin to dry out.
What can be done to prevent the condition? Proper skin care is key to preventing this condition. People subject to dry skin should soak thoroughly while bathing or showering, but limit the amount of soap they use. Some people may be able to use mild, moisturising preparations all over the body. A few need to limit soap use to the underarms and genitalia. After towel drying, it is necessary to apply a thick layer of heavy moisturising cream or ointment to all skin surfaces. Ordinary lotions are usually not heavy enough. They do, however, provide a first step for people who are not using any type of moisturiser. Showering daily is not a problem as long as these precautions are followed.
How is the condition diagnosed? Individuals with dry skin can diagnose the condition themselves based on their symptoms.
What are the long-term effects of the condition? Eczema can form in long-standing cases of dry skin.
What are the treatments for the condition? The treatment for dry skin is the same as the prevention steps.
What are the side effects of the treatments? There are minimal side effects to treatment, unless an individual is allergic to moisturisers. Those individuals should choose unscented or hypoallergenic moisturisers.
What happens after treatment for the condition? Moisturiser should be applied to the skin on a regular basis during the dry weather. This will help prevent symptoms from returning
